Abstract

Endometriosis is a chronic disease where endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus, affecting the ovaries, pelvic peritoneum and other remote locations. It affects 10-15% of women of reproductive age. The risk factors include nulliparity and heavy menstruation. Its symptoms include pelvic pain, infertility, and non-specific symptoms, associated with its location, making diagnosis and treatment challenging. Case Report: in the current work, an updated literature review of this entity, its origin, dissemination pathways, therapeutic management, and possible complications is carried out. This report concerns a 36-year-old patient who presented a history of pneumothorax and was hospitalized for chest pain associated with the menstrual cycle at the Metropolitan Hospital. A chest X-ray showed spontaneous pneumothorax, and a transvaginal ultrasound revealed fibroids and possible endometriomas. Thoracoscopy and lung resection were performed to find lesions compatible with endometriosis. Additionally, laparoscopy confirmed the presence of fibroids and endometriomas. After surgery, the patient evolved favorably and was discharged without complications. Histopathological analysis of the lung and diaphragmatic pleura confirmed endometriosis.
