Abstract

Objective: Compare the fracture resistance in conventional direct restorations and direct restorations with polyethylene fibers, in class II MOD cavities of premolars subjected to mechanical compression tests. Materials and methods: comparative experimental study in vitro. Sample of 56 premolars extracted for orthodontic reasons Group A: 21 samples with direct conventional restorations, Group B: 21 samples with direct conventional restorations with polyethylene fibers and Group C: 14 intact premolars. The samples were prepared with the respective restorative protocol, aged under thermocycling; and were subjected to vertical compression forces and measured in Newtons (N). Shapiro-Wilk tests were performed to determine the normality of the sample, one-way Anova parametric tests for quantitative variables and Chi-square for qualitative variables. Results: The fracture resistance of Group A) was 1107.218 N ± 239.26 N, Group B) 1024.453N ± 264.52 N and Group C 1598.2 N ± 383.97. Conclusion: There was no significant difference in fracture resistance between Group A, B and C, p value >0.05. The type and pattern of fracture did have a significant difference p<0.05. Group A presented catastrophic and non-repairable fractures in 61.9%, while Group B presented repairable and less catastrophic fractures in 85%.
